Meditation for Well-Being

Meditation is quickly gaining popularity for its impact on health and well-being. Research demonstrates that the influence of meditation is both immediate and long-lasting. Meditation can help you manage stress, lower blood pressure, sleep better, and connect more deeply with yourself and the world.

There are many different types of meditation. Some techniques involve monitoring your breath as a vehicle to quieting the mind; others involve sound or repeating words. Meditation can be practiced while sitting quietly or it can be practiced while walking or moving.

One main point of meditation is to provide access to expanded states of awareness; introduce us to the workings of our own minds, the stories we tell, the ways in which we allow or deny connection to the world.

Meditation can be a spiritual practice or a secular practice; or both. Many of the techniques practiced here in the modern West derive from Hindu or Buddhist practices, so their underpinnings are spiritually influenced.

Healthcare and other professional industries, including governments, have fully embraced the practice of Mindfulness. With a secular version that focuses solely on the impact on our biology, it has become a sort of ‘one-size-fits-all’ way for people to access increased experiences of health and well-being.

Through regular meditation practice, you can enjoy many physiological and emotional benefits including:

  • Improved heart rate variability

  • Strengthened immune function

  • Decreased inflammation

  • Reduced anxiety

  • Decreased stress hormones

  • Enhanced feelings of well-being, joy, and equanimity

  • A deeper awareness of your connection to the Cosmos
